Waterfalls Galore!

We found waterfalls galore in the mountains of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.  Big ones, little ones, fast ones, slow ones.

The most picture perfect was Whitewater Falls in North Carolina.  It has a drop of over 1,000' and claims to be one of the tallest east of the Mississippi River.  Great trails and several good viewing areas. We visited the Upper Falls and hiked down to the lower viewing platform.   A few hundred steps that reward with a great view of the falls.

The most breathtaking was Tallulah Gorge in Georgia.  It literally took our breath away.  Although it is not a place to visit if you are afraid of heights!  The views of the Gorge and Waterfalls from the main viewing area are fascinating, about 750' above the water.  The interpretive center was very nice and the park rangers were helpful in determining the best sights.  Since we were looking for a short hike with the kids, we hiked another 300'uphill to Inspiration Point.

The family favorites were Bull Sluice Rapids and Woodall Shoals; both on the Chatooga River.  The kids loved playing on the river banks in the sand and rocks.  The rapids were a great background for pictures and allowed us to explore all day.  Newts floating downstream, kayakers fighting the rapids, glittering sand, giant boulders to climb, and more.
