Cannons, Bunkers, and Rain at Fort McAllister

While traveling south down the East Coast, we stopped at Fort McAllister.  Jill's favorite campground (so far)!  The campground is on the grounds of a Civil War Fort and is located on an island surrounded by a salt marsh.  Beautiful large private sites. Easy bike riding for the kids. Dustin explored the awesome nature trails.  The kids learned about ocean tides, and how much the water rises and falls every day.  Having lived by freshwater lakes most of their lives, they were amazed to see the water level change so dramatic so often.

Even better, Fort McAllister is a Civil War Fort. Canyons, bunkers galore! The self guided fort is well maintained.  This park is home to the best preserved earthwork fortification for the Confederacy. This fort was attacked 7 times, but did not fall until 1864 during Sherman's famous March to the Sea.  We waked the huge earthworks, then explored the underground bunkers.  Touched the large cannons, and learned about the battles that shaped the country.

So much to learn from our history.  So easy to explore at this state park.  Such a wonderful campground.

Would we go back?  YES!  We will likely go out of our way to visit this park again.
