Washington Island, WI

Body of Water: Lake Michigan
Miles Traveled: 52

Let the adventure begin. We set sail early from the Port of Manistique. It was interesting navigating the river in the dark.

The lake was a little rough on the way to Washington Island, mostly 2 footers with some additional large swells mixed in. We enjoyed legos, playdough, books and magazines to pass the time. Some of the kids napped in the sunshine with mom. It took us a little longer than expected to arrive, 10 hours. We were all pretty tired when we arrived but wanted to check out the beach.

Day #1
The first night we anchored in Washington Harbor, home of Schoolhouse Beach. We took our first dingy ride to shore. This limestone beach is was so neat. It is one of only 5 beaches like this in the world. The rocks were perfectly smooth. We had a blast. A beautiful sunset finished our first day of the loop.

Day #2
The first night at anchor proved to be an interesting one. The winds changed directions and we awoke to the anchor alarms (DragQueen) sounding. We decided to head to the other side of the island that was more protected.  We docked at the Washington Island Ferry Dock in Detroit Harbor. After docking we headed out for a family hike at the Heritage Nature Trail and had pizza from Island Pizza ( home of Dan Dan the Pizza Man). Ask for their family pizza special ($20).

Day #3
We woke up to find water on the floor, one of the front bilge pumps was not on. Lots to learn and remember. Dustin was back to work after a long weekend. After "boatschooling" the kids and I headed out to explore the island. Our stops included Stavkirke, Mountain Park and Lookout Tower, Sievers School of Fiber Arts, Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum, and the Art and Nature Center!
