Tannehill Historic State Park

Tannehill Historic State Park is located in Alabama.  One of our favorite stops to date.  We had planned to stay for 2 days, as we passed through Alabama.  However, we enjoyed this park so much we stayed 10 days.

Tannehill is home to over 50 historic buildings dating back to the Civil War.  Originally the location of an iron furnace and forge which provided most of the iron used for munition and armor by the Confederacy.  Most original buildings were burned to the ground by Union soldiers at the end of the war, and have since been rebuilt.

There are three campgrounds at the park.  Two have full hook ups, and they all have nice laundry/shower houses.  The store, museum, sweets store, miniature railway, and ranger station are all manned, and the other 40+ buildings are self guided.  All costs were inexpensive with a great weekly rate.  The museum only cost $2 for adults and $1 for kids! (Perfect for a family of 6)  The only thing we would not do again is visit the local flea market in Bessemer, AL.  It is a weekly, year-round, flea market, and easy to forget.

Water was the highlight of the visit, since there are
rivers, creeks, and canals everywhere.  The kids enjoyed watching the rivers and creeks for animals.  A group of ducks lived near our campsite, and we watched an otter playing in the river several evenings.

The trails were amazing!  Nicely groomed with interpretive signs around every corner.  We explored different trails everyday yet did not see everything in 10 days.  Also took advantage of the other outdoor facilities to host daily homeschool lessons.

This was one of our favorite parks and we will make a point to return to this park in the future.
